As some of you know, I live in Iowa. I love it here in the midwest! One thing you don’t see a lot here are copper lanterns. The first time I saw copper lanterns in person was when I went to Austin for the Hunter Fan Company trip to the Southern Living Magazine Idea House. I’m a sucker for good light fixtures especially copper lanterns. It was literally love at first sight! The house had gas and electric copper lanterns throughout the exterior.
For the new house, copper lanterns were a must for the exterior of our house. There’s something “timeless” and welcoming about copper lanterns in a home. Also, I love how they give off that southern charm…in my case midwest charm. 😉 When I was planning for the new house, I envisioned a white exterior with bluish shutters and copper lanterns. Can you visualize it?? Check out my mood board for the exterior of our house!
There are so many ways to differentiate your home from the rest of your neighborhood like landscaping, paint color, but don’t forget about exterior light fixtures! That’s personally what I notice! After doing some research, Primo lanterns caught my eye! Primo has been around for 40+ years, and all of their lanterns are handcrafted from pure copper using brass fittings and valves which ensure long-lasting quality and durability. Then a light glaze is hand applied to the aged copper finish to prevent uneven natural color aging throughout the years. Also, all their lanterns have tempered glass.
Primo offers gas and electric lanterns, and for our house, we went with electric for all exterior lanterns. If I could go back, I would do gas lanterns (instead of electric) for the front porch hanging lantern or the sunroom wall mounts. Of course, I’d love the nostalgic ambiance of gas lanterns, but we didn’t wire a gas line in those areas, so it was too late. 😉 Definitely keep that in mind if you want to go with gas lanterns for your own home!
I can’t wait to share which lanterns we decided on for the new house! Stay tuned for the next blog post! For now, enjoy these beautiful exteriors with Primo lanterns!

We have Bevelo gas lanterns on the front porch of our Bluffton, South Carolina home. We’re considering the Primo 18” Orleans lanterns for the carriage house. Our concern is that the clear coat on the copper Primo lanterns will prevent them from aging to a weathered patina like our 18 year old gas Bevelo lanterns.
