Make a house feel like home

Sharing some home decor items to help make a house feel like home!

We moved into our house last year in January, and I’m slowly trying to make our new house feel like home.  I always admire the people that I see on Instagram where they move into their house and every single room is decorated.  I don’t know how they do it!  Ha!  It would take me months to decide what to put on the walls or what furniture to get.  You can say that I’m a bit indecisive. 🙂

Today I wanted to share what I added to my house to help it feel more decorated/homey.

CENTERPIECE

Whether it’s the dining room table or breakfast table, adding a centerpiece makes a huge difference!  I love having a floral arrangement as my centerpiece, and the flowers can be real or fake.  Usually, I would have faux flower stems in a vase, but if I had a choice, I’d have real flowers all the time.  My favorites are hydrangeas and peonies!

The vase I’m using is actually a candleholder, but it’s big enough you can use it as a vase!  Love the woven detail on the bottom!

TABLE SETTING

Having a pretty tablescape makes a home feel real inviting, but having a table set all the time might not be realistic for most people.  If you know you’re going to have visitors over for dinner or even just for coffee, having your table set is a form of decoration!  It can be real simple with just a placemat and a plate.  White is classic and most of us have white plates and bowls, but you can also try adding color with your dinnerware!  Here I have the BHG at Walmart blue dinnerware set which matches my breakfast nook centerpiece and pillows.  These come in 6 other colors too!

It’s always nice to offer water or drinks to your visitors, and why not have your drink in a cute pitcher like this stoneware one?!

throw PILLOWS

Can you have enough pillows?  No, of course not!  Pillows make a huge difference in any area of your home.  Of course having decorative pillows on your bed and couch is a given, but add pillows to a bench like in a breakfast nook as shown.  You can also add pillows on a bench in the bedroom placed at the foot of the bed or a bench in the mudroom or foyer.  I’ve also added pillows on dining room chairs, desk chair, and accent chairs in the living room and bedroom.  I love adding pillows because it adds more texture and color in a space.

I love how Better Homes & Gardens at Walmart came out with blue pillows.  The linen all blue pillow came in a set of two, and I’ve had my eye on the blue floral print for awhile now and couldn’t get it because it was out of stock.  Well, now it’s back in stock, so hurry before it’s gone!

rugs

How I feel about pillows is the same for rugs.  You can add color and texture by adding a rug to any room.  I’m sure most of us think of having rugs in the living room, dining room, and bedroom, but have you thought about the kitchen or even your outdoor space?  I love adding a runner in my kitchen, and I am obsessed with this vintage looking rug from Walmart!

This rug looks high end, and it’s only $39!  What a great price!  I plan on getting the 2’x3′ version of this rug and placing it by my kitchen sink.

KITCHEN DECOR

I love using cute boards as decor in my kitchen and usually set 2-3 boards leaned against the wall above the range.  Here I have a round and a rectangle one, but sometimes I would have 2-3 different round ones that are different sizes.  If you use certain boards all the time, placing it here above the range would be so convenient!

I like using cake stands or a footed board to group certain kitchen essentials together.  Here I’m using a wooden cake stand, and I like how I can use this for birthday parties too!  This would be perfect for our kids’ birthday tradition of having donut cake for breakfast.

You can place your go-to kitchen essentials on this stand like sugar, salt and pepper shakers, and oil/vinegar bottle.  Add your favorite candle here too!

wall frames

I take a long time figuring out what to put on the walls, but you can never go wrong with framed artwork/prints.  Love how big these wooden frames are!  It a 16″x20″ frame matted for 11″x14″ prints.  I placed these in the foyer, and at first I didn’t know whether to put a blueprint of our house (front and rear prints), family prints, or artwork.  Eventually, I decided to do art pieces, and it turned out perfectly in this area!  Wall frames are great in any room!

baskets

Baskets are a great way to “hide” things, and also look pretty in any room.  This woven basket by the fireplace holds our blankets, but this is also perfect for kids toys, dog toys, bath towels, and toilet paper.  You can even use it as a hamper if you wanted!

Hope you enjoyed this blog post and gets you inspired and motivated to decorate your own house!  Let’s make a house feel like home!  You can find more BHG at Walmart blog posts here!
